Surprise. Short poem for children about the great emotion of being surprised

Surprise! On our site we surprise all children and their families with a funny short poem written by Marisa Alonso that precisely talks about ...The surprise! What would life be without surprises? It would surely be much more boring. Because the emotion we feel when we are surprised is unmatched, especially when the surprise is happy!

Below you can read this funny children's poetry that we have accompanied by some equally fun and useful activities to work on the different abilities and capacities of the little ones. Why should we educate children from surprise and amazement? We will tell you!

Right away you will be able to read this short poem about surprise. But first, you should know that it is a very short nursery rhyme, it only has two stanzas. AND each of these stanzas has four verses. Also, do you know what kind of rhyme it has? Is it assonance, that is, do the final vowels of the verse rhyme? Is it a consonant, do both vowels and consonants rhyme? It won't take long to find out!

It will no longer be a surprise

if what you expect happens

because you're waiting for it

and you wait for it to happen.

It will only be a surprise

if it arrives without warning

and it is unexpected.

We can use this poem as a literary text to simply enjoy the poetic genre. But we can also go further and propose some activities for reflection and practice of the different abilities of children. Here are some ideas that you can use with your children. We recommend that you adapt these games and exercises to the age and knowledge of your little ones.

1. Questions to Ponder About Surprise
What does it mean to be surprised? We propose some questions that you can ask your children to reflect on this emotion. Based on these questions, you can lead a very interesting conversation about wonder.

  • How would you define the word 'surprise'?
  • Do you remember something or a situation in which you felt surprised?
  • Have you ever surprised someone?
  • Can surprises make us happy? And sad?

2. Write a poem about another emotion
This poem by Marisa Alonso talks about surprise. But why don't you write your own verses that deal with other children's emotions? Your poetry can talk about joy, sadness, anger, disgust ...

This is a very interesting exercise to stimulate children's creativity, but it is also very useful for children to reflect on their emotions and, therefore, learn to identify them, name them and, as a next step, manage them.

3. Memorize the verses
Learning children's poems by heart can be a bit boring activity, however, it is a very useful exercise to work memory. In addition, it is very satisfying to be able to recite to a family member or friend without having to look at the paper. Therefore, with short poems like this we can encourage the little ones to memorize it (even encourage ourselves to memorize them ourselves, the parents!).

4. Record an audiopoem
Have you ever recorded an audiopoem? It is a very fun and very rewarding activity. It is as simple as using the mobile recorder (if you don't have it already installed you can download any recording app) to record yourself reciting a poem. You can even use calm and soft music to accompany your recital. You can send the audio file to family and friends to give them a fun surprise.

Although we do not always take it into account, since we cannot plan it (as the poem says, if it were not unexpected, it would cease to be a surprise), amazement is one of the emotions that children feel and that, therefore, they have to learn to manage.

As with the rest of the emotions, it is neither positive nor negative, since we can learn from it in any case. Worse, in addition, in this case, the surprise can be accompanied by a pleasant or unpleasant feeling, depending on whether something surprises us for better or for worse.

In any case, what leaves no doubt is that surprise is also important in the education of children, since we can play with the effect it produces to motivate and help children's learning. For this, it is necessary that we take into account the following points.

- Younger children are continually surprised, since everything around them is new to them and, therefore, amazes them. We must accompany them since sometimes those surprises fill them with innocence and illusion, but it is normal that they sometimes feel fear of the unknown.

- Finding a way to surprise our children will make them learn with more enthusiasm and joy. Thanks to wonder, children do not take things for granted, which opens the limits of their imagination and mentality. In this way, they will adopt a more active positioning in learning.

- Thanks to surprise, we can create an atmosphere of optimism and happiness at home, which improves coexistence and family relationships.

- The little ones begin to appreciate the little things that surround them in their day-to-day life and that also surprise them: a ladybug that walks on the other side of the window, a lentil that grows after being planted in a container with wet cotton. They are small things that can also fill you with happiness each and every day.
