Physics, chemistry and science are learned in school and in books, but they can also be reviewed as a family with mobile applications, with specialized websites, with very fun home science experiments and, of course, through games. There are many things and games that we can do at home and as a family so that our sons and daughters learn physics (and also chemistry) in an enjoyable way and so that they can put into practice and reinforce the knowledge they acquire with textbooks.
We will start by looking at some simple experiments that can be done at home with a few materials. To raise them, we suggest that you bring the whole family together and try to make your own hypotheses about why what they show happens. The conclusions that you obtain will surely help the children to review some of the lessons they have learned in their school physics lesson.
But, in addition to experiments, there are other very useful educational resources that, through play, bring children closer to physics or chemistry. Let's see it all!
Doing home experiments is on the list of the favorite things of boys and girls of all ages. No wonder, they can see for themselves how the concepts they see in their books work and what they are for. We suggest some here but surely you can also think of many others.
1. Balloon experiments. How to roll a can with a balloon
For this fun experiment we need:
- 1 balloon
- 1 empty soda can
- 1 mat
We take the balloon and fill it with air. Next, we bring the balloon to the mat and gently rub it for a few seconds to charge it with electricity. Now we bring the empty can to the balloon. Separate one from the other and you will see how the can rolls to follow the balloon. As if it were a magnet! Don't have a mat at home? Nothing happens! Rub the balloon on your hair or that of your children, you will see thate static electricity charge.
2. Home experiment of water that does not fall
Can a glass of water not spill if we turn it over? Well yes, and it is most amazing. To make this game we will need:
- 1 long glass or tube glass
- Any 1 card from a deck
- 1 water fountain (just in case)
- Some water
We take the glass and fill it to the top but without a drop falling. Next we put the letter on the glass to cover it. Now we will do the most exciting, turn around, carefully, to the glass. The water will not fall!
3. Can you make a coin disappear?
A very simple and practical experiment to teach physics to children. We will need:
- 1 crystal glass
- 1 coin
- Some water
We put the coin in the bottom of the glass and we fill it with water. Now we will repeat the process, but this time putting the glass on top of the coin. Once we have filled it with water, the coin cannot be seen. This phenomenon is called refraction which makes us believe that the coin has disappeared because the light, when passing from the middle it deviates, just as it happens when going from air to water. Have you seen how cool? Your kids are sure to love it.
4. Experiment to cross a balloon without exploding
Well yes, as you hear, it turns out that you can go through a balloon without exploding. Physics stuff! Necessary material:
- 1 balloon
- 1 needle or wooden skewer
- A little of oil
We inflate the balloon with air and tie a knot in the nozzle. Next we smear the wooden skewer or needle with a pinch of oil and also the part where the balloon knot is. Now we carefully cross the globe, to do this, we insert the needle through the knot part and we take it out at the opposite end.
Why can this be done? Well, because the air inside the balloon is not uniform. In the part of the knot is where there is less tension so we can pass the needle without exploding. Wow!

And if we go further and we want our children to become familiar with the stars or, even, with our own planet Earth, we can use apps as impressive and entertaining as Google Earth or Sky Map with them.
