Dictations are very useful exercises for boys and girls to learn grammar rules well, including punctuation marks (commas, quotation marks, periods, hyphens ...). On our site we have prepared a series of short dictations for children to review punctuation marks. These activities can be done in class with your students or at home with your children, you will see that they learn everything wonderfully.
The punctuation marks are not more complex, however, when children first know them, it can be somewhat difficult to know in what context they are used and how some signs differ from each other. Do with your children the dictations that we propose here, surely that will be easier and more enjoyable for them.
Before beginning with the dictations, review either in class or at home what the grammar rule says about each punctuation mark. With these first dictations, we practice the use of the comma in enumerations but also to make clarifications.
1. I like to have cookies, milk, juice, bread and butter. Although my mother always says that it is better to have banana, orange, avocado and whole wheat bread.
2. Last year we went to the jungle and saw many animals, there were the tiger, the lion, the cheetah, the panther and the elephant. I liked them all but my favorites were the tiger, the lion and the elephant.
Remember that you must work on a punctuation mark each time, in this way you can learn them without confusing them. This time we focus on understanding the use of the semicolon. This punctuation mark is used to separate two different phrases, which sometimes have commas within them.
3. Once upon a time there was a boy who always liked to run, so much so that even within the class he did it; One day, the teacher told him that since he did not sit still, he would have to remove his chair. The poor boy had no choice but to listen to his teacher.
4. I have searched for all possible options; however, I still haven't found the correct one. Maybe if I put a tie here, remove this and add that it can look good.
Tell your students what is the difference between the period followed, which joins sentences from the same context, and the separate period, which introduces different texts.
5. The one in the meadow was very comfortable, so much so that the animals did not want to leave. Suddenly the clouds began to come, that changed everything.
Dog got up, Cat did the same, and Tigre followed shortly after. It was time to go home.
6. That afternoon in the park there were many stories. Pedro learned to play tag and Marcos made three new friends.
Alba did not stop jumping rope while her little sister had a great time playing with the bucket and spade.
A colon can be used hundreds of times, for example in an enum. Let's see it in some practical examples!
7. Ready to buy: milk, coffee and pasta.
8. List of duties: read the story, do the addition and subtraction and finish the dictation.
9. Purposes for this week: play ball with mom, make a cake with dad and see the pictures with Lola.
The ellipsis are usually somewhat confusing. Make as many dictations as these are necessary so that the children know them well. They are often used to put a sentence on hold. Do we review its correct use?
10. In the lunchroom at my school they always say that you have to eat healthy, that's why they always give us things like vegetables, chickpeas, whole wheat bread ... that's fine, but me and my brother like to eat macaroni and tomato better. They are delicious!
11. Could it be ... well thought out though ... what if we gave him some skates? Jorge is always doing sports, it sure makes him look forward to it.
As their names indicate, question marks are used to mark that the phrase is a question. In the case of exclamation marks, they convey surprise or more intensity. Remind the children that there should always be an opening sign and a closing sign.
12. Of course not! I want to go to the park right now! We can? I really want to play hide and seek with my friends.
13. Can you go up there? Sure you do, but you better be careful lest the evil sorcerer do his thing ... Oh no! Here it comes!
Parentheses can also be used in a multitude of contexts. Start by teaching the most common cases, that is, to add extra information or clarification within a sentence.
14. At my house they always have soup (made from vegetables), grandmother's bread and chicken (also from grandmother's). What I like the most is that after having dinner we all sit on the couch together to watch the cartoon movies.
15. Marcos (the one with the blue sweater) is thinking of doing his thing. I know it very well, I know that rogue face he makes. Andrés (the one in the green shirt) are also thinking of something, who knows what came to them this time!
Have you noticed that many of these short dictations have no end? Propose your students to finish it, they will surely love the idea.
16. The 'party' was a bit boring, I say it that way because more than that it seemed like any other evening. So there is no way to meet new friends or partner.
17. Nicolás lost the 'souvenir' that he had been saving so much. It turns out that he left it in the bank and, in the rush to catch the plane on time, there it was forgotten forever.
Scripts are used primarily to indicate the order and dialogue of characters in a story.
18. - Ines, you have to pick up your toys, it's time to sleep, - said the mother.
- What I don't want! I'm going to play for a while more- answered little Ines, who had no intention of paying attention to her mother.
"But daughter, don't you realize what time it is?" The mother replied.

The umlaut is not considered a punctuation mark, it is rather a spelling sign, however, we have included it in this compilation of dictations because it is one of the things that children have the most difficulty learning. Before doing the dictation, do a brief review of what the grammar rule says in this case so that there is no doubt. Remember that it is used to mark that the U within 'que', 'qui', 'gue' or 'gui' must sound.
20. The penguin dances happily, he is very happy because he knows that the canoeists have already left. Now you can go up in your canoe quietly.
21. To be bilingual you have to study hard. You also have to attend in class and see the drawings in their original version. I sure do!
22. The stork is embarrassed to go out for a walk. You can't tell if someone is hiding in the middle of the road.
