Sometimes we wonder why there are children who gain weight more easily without eating so much and others who find it difficult to gain weight. A balanced diet and physical exercise is the key to maintaining children's health and control childhood obesity.

But to find the causes of weight changes in children we must understand what is metabolism. It is the metabolic processes that in the end determine not only the child's weight, but also that his body functions properly and enjoys energy and good health.

Metabolism is the set of chemical reactions that occurs in our body, essential for the body to carry out all functions. It is actually the vital process par excellence, that is why it should be understood, and it is also closely related to infant feeding.

At the same time that the child begins to eat, these foods are breaking down their nutrients so that each one performs its proper function. The metabolic process It consists of using these nutrients in two ways: either releasing them for energy, or storing them for use when you need them.

And where are the leftover nutrients stored? Generally in body tissues, muscles, liver and body fat. Hence we can understand the need for the child to remain active, so that their metabolism uses food as soon as possible to have more energy and do not reserve too many in the form of overweight.

Depending on the metabolism of each person, the body uses or saves the nutrients left over from food and that is precisely what influences the weight of children. Metabolism is determined by genetic factorsBut it is not a gift or a curse, since eating and exercise habits depend on each one. There are two types of metabolism:

- Fast metabolism. Children with a fast metabolism do not usually have obesity problems because their bodies quickly convert nutrients into energy. An energy that they expend in the form of physical activities and staying active throughout the day.

- Slow metabolism. On the contrary, children with a slow metabolism are those who tend to suffer from overweight problems in childhood because their body stores excess nutrients in the form of body fat since the demand for energy is not that high. But while we can do nothing to change the metabolism, we can make children aware of the need to practice more sports and feed them in a healthier way.
