According to experts from the National Autonomous University of Mexico, half of the women who quit smoking during pregnancy resume the habit within six months of giving birth.
Health alerts about the bad effects of tobacco on the baby during pregnancy have permeated many women and the rate of them who quit smoking during pregnancy is very high. However, it is becoming clear that many of them relapse after giving birth.
Why many women start smoking again after pregnancy?
Smoking kills, tobacco packs already say, but why is it even more important to quit smoking during pregnancy? Obstetricians when warning smoking moms: nicotine has effects in the baby such as low birth weight, future breathing problems, spontaneous abortion or attention deficit by damaging the neuronal structure.
The developing baby's tiny body is faced with a substance twice as toxic as black widow venom, a hair-raising simile indeed. And it is that, nicotine is a powerful poison whose effects can reach the baby through the blood and the placenta.
Since 1993, awareness-raising work has been carried out on the tobacco risks during pregnancy. However, there are still many who do not quit during pregnancy or say they have but continue to smoke secretly for fear of social stigmatization.
A team of researchers from the University of East Anglia in the United Kingdom has analyzed 1,031 American and Canadian women. They found that 75% of women who quit smoking during pregnancy resumed the habit within 6 months after the birth of their baby and between 80% and 90% relapsed during the first year.
What reasons led them to relapse? Factors included the influence of a smoking environment, regaining pre-pregnancy identity, postpartum stress, and the belief that once the baby is born, tobacco can no longer cause harm.
The habit of smoking makes smoking fathers and mothers in many cases not take the precaution of never smoking in front of their children. It is not uncommon to see a mom pushing a stroller with a cigarette in her fingers or a dad playing in the park with his children while smoking. They also usually smoke at home and, even if the window is opened or they go out to the terrace, it is enough to enter a smoker's house for the smell of nicotine with which children live invade you.
The risks of children of smoking parents are tremendous:
- Irreversible damage to the structures of the arteries.
- It is related to the sudden death of the infant.
- Increases the incidence of otitis, asthmatic crisis, respiratory infections, irritation in the muscles, etc.
- More risk of hospitalization.
